Program Topic "The Art of Identification"
In the same way that poetry conveys rich meaning in just a few words, the illustrations in a field guide need to give maximum information in minimum space. Tracing his own artistic development through sketches and paintings, David discusses the unique requirements and challenges of illustrating for a field guide. |

Birds on the NIagara takes place in and along the international river corridor which is the border between Canada and the U.S.A. Our festival takes place indoors and outdoors in both Canada and the USA at venues and locations from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario.
Birds on the Niagara has a 3-part focus that helps us to celebrate our important place on this planet. BIRDS Our festival takes place in locations in or connected to the Niagara River Corridor Globally Significant Important Bird and Biodiversity Area. Birds and biodiversity in all seasons help to characterize our Niagara natural spaces. Winter birds include hundreds of thousands of birds including Snowy Owls, many species of waterfowl (some in breeding plumage) including ducks, geese, and swans, and a wide variety of typical winter birds in this region as well as the occassional irruptive events involving finches and other far north species. Many of the migrating species are here because over historic time, the Niagara River was the first open waters as these birds traveled from the arctic, the boreal, and the tundra to warmer and more hospitable wintering areas. CONSERVATION Finding ways to get to a future that helps to insure positive quality of life for human generations to come has to include profound dialogue, planning, and engagement. We have to find ways to conserve our ecologically productive natural resources. Our festival brings together conservationists, decisionmakers, students, nature lovers and families to learn about, promote, and lead conservation initiatives that impact the health of our local habitats, our bioregion, our hemisphere, and our globe. INCLUSION Planning and managing a future for healthy human populations has many voices. Birds on the Niagara has as a central mission to bring those voices together so that, together, we can find ways to protect our planet. We strive for programming for and with people of color, indigenous voices, the LGBTQ+ Community, the elderly, people with different abilities, and children and families of our communities. |
